Stupid Computers

Computers crash. A lot. Last year I kept getting this messsage saying that hard drive failure was imminent (see pic). HAHA yeah right! How could it know? So I went about my business for a couple weeks, then all of a sudden, it crashed. Yeah funny, jokes on me.

Aside from crashes, Windows gets bogged down and broken after awhile, so you need to reinstall everything. So anyways I get sick of having to reformat it and reinstall everything and I always forget where to find all the programs I use, and forget how to set up the networking and various other things. So this is a stupid little page full of stuff useless to mostly everyone but myself. Enjoy!

Programs I use:

These are all programs and device drivers I use frequently and where to download them.

Zonealarm (at the bottom)
SSH Secure Shell
MSN Messenger
Kazaa Lite
ATI Display Drivers
Speedfan
Winamp Classic
Winzip
Winace
Nero
ACDSee
Divx
Teraterm Pro
JASC Paint Shop Pro

Sounds:

I put a bunch of Simpsons sounds on my computer and I have to reload them and figure out where the hell they go after a crash!! Well no more --- !!!

Program Event File/Sound
Asterisk Ralph -- I'm Special
Critical Stop Nelson -- HA HA
Default Beep DOH
Exit Windows Apu -- THanks for coming, I'll see you in Hell!!
Start Windows Flanders -- Hidely Ho! (how the hell do you spell that??)
MSN Messenger: Contact Online Homer -- You Are Gay!
MSN Messenger: New Message Krusty -- HUHAHAHAHAHAHA
Empty Recycle Bin Homer -- Booooooobies

Configuring Email -- Outlook:

Well Outlook sucks but I'm getting sick of Pine. The problem is I have to configure Outlook to read my server. Sooooo, here are the steps (I'll forget shortly after installing it).

  1. Install Outlook Express (Outlook Express is better than Outlook for just emails).
  2. Create new identity and internet connection.
  3. Enter your screen name and email addy.
  4. Change incoming server to IMAP (IMPORTANT!! POP simply downloads your emails, IMAP allows you to move/delete and change emails on the actual email server).
  5. Enter incoming/outgoing mail server (mail.internetaddy.com or similar).
  6. Enter account name, password, check 'Use Secure Password Authentication'.
  7. Import mail/addresses if you want.
  8. Go to tools/options:
    1. General: Check 'go directly to inbox', uncheck 'Notify any new newsgroups', 'check mail every xx minutes'.
    2. Read: Check 'Read all msgs in plain text', change 'mark msgs msgs as read after' to 0 seconds.
    3. Send: Change 'Mail sending format' to PLAIN TEXT
    4. Maintenance: uncheck 'Compact msgs in background' -- IMPORTANT -- Outlook can corrupt your saved emails if you leave this on!
    5. Security: uncheck 'Do not allow attachments saved/open if potential virus' -- Well this is dumb, Outlook simply prevents most attachments from being opened unless its a picture ... But its more secure.
  9. Connect and synchronise all emails.
There ya go, there are also some important security patches and such to install, but I'll get to that later.
